School of Fine & Performing Arts

The Fine and Performing Arts Division represents the following disciplines:Art, Dance, Fashion Design, Music, Performing Arts and Theatre. All programs in the division are designed to teach students the theoretical as well as the practical aspects of each area of study. Lindenwood students, therefore, leave the university equipped to succeed in these highly competitive fields.

The program in Fine or Studio Arts offers a degree in Art Education as well as a BA or BFA with specialization in such fields as painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, and computer design. Students also may choose a concentration in Art History. In 1997, the University added the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design, which has already placed two students with international designers in London. Students in Fine and Studio Arts are encouraged to enter competitions beginning with their first year of study and are also assisted with placement in meaningful and significant internships. The graduate program was expanded in 1998 to include the MFA in Studio Art. A unique feature of this program is the opportunity for individuals to enroll as part-time students.

Programs in Performing Arts include emphases in acting, directing, technical theatre, dance, musical theatre, vocal and instrumental music. As in Fine Arts, faculty members continue to be practicing professionals in their respective fields and represent performers and educators with national and, in some cases, international reputations.

At Lindenwood, first year students are encouraged to audition and participate: there are no arbitrary barriers or "rights of passage." Students, we believe, learn best by attending classes AND by applying what they learn in a timely fashion. The Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts are offered in Theatre. Graduate degrees in Education with emphases in music, dance and sacred music are also available.

At Lindenwood University, students in the arts are expected to develop their talents in many ways within the framework of academic pursuit and performance. This is why our graduates are successful working artists.
