The Lindenwood University Fashion Design Program has evolved through the years to respond and challenge the growing field of fashion. Our program provides practical and technical skills to prepare students for the competitive fashion industry. Our program combines traditional techniques such as professional draping, patternmaking, and sewing with new age technology in computer aided design (CAD) for apparel, textiles, and patternmaking.
Faculty members are seasoned professionals with current experiences and the ability to open doors through connections within the industry.
Top designers serve as jurors for the annual student runway show. Jurors have included designers from Puma, Eddie Bauer, Under Armour, Project Runway, Ermenegildo Zegna, and local professionals within the community.
An internship at a leading fashion house gives you experience and valuable connections. Internship sites have included Under Armour, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger, just to name a few.
In our program, students will:
- Connect with industry leaders at guest lectures and industry events, and build a network of valuable contacts.
- Have the opportunity to study abroad. Programs include unique trips to Paris, France; Berlin, Germany; and Florence, Italy.
- Experience apparel sourcing from one of the biggest fashion industry leaders, New York City.
APPROACH TO DESIGN
During the first year, students will develop a foundation for art and design to understand the different approaches in this discipline. Courses include 2D and 3D design, basic drawing, figure drawing, and introduction to graphic design. During the second and third year students will develop unique design skills through experimental design and by designing a mini collection utilizing special construction techniques, computer-aided design, and theoretical approaches found in historical costume.
BUILDING A COLLECTION
Senior year is focused on the thesis project and individual portfolio. Students produce finished senior collections and graduate portfolios reflecting their personal design philosophies. The work is reviewed by a jury of industry professionals and considered for student awards in various categories vital to the fashion industry.
