Associate Professor Jill Falk began her career as a reporter, anchor, and producer at television stations in Illinois and Michigan prior to joining the School of Communications in 2006. She chairs the journalism department and oversees student newscasts as LUTV’s News Director.
After earning her B.A. from Eastern Illinois University in Speech Communication, her love of politics and journalism led her to the Public Affairs Reporting program at the University of Illinois-Springfield where she earned her M.A.
She landed her first reporting job in the political sphere covering the happenings of Former Governors George Ryan and Rod Blagojevich. During her time in Illinois politics, she also interviewed then State Senator Barack Obama and covered his campaign for the U.S. Senate. Falk left the whirlwind of Illinois politics for the land of the Spartans in Lansing, Michigan where she anchored a top-rated morning show for the NBC affiliate.
Falk served as board member and communications chair for Gateway Media Literacy Partners, Inc., promoting media literacy in the St. Louis region. In addition, each summer, she leads a multimedia workshop for high school journalists as part of MediaNowSTL digital media camp at Lindenwood University.
An early adopter of all things new media (link: www.twitter.com/jillfalk), her teaching philosophy encourages students to learn about media through media (link: www.jillfalk.com/permission_to_create/ ). She writes about her experiences in “the digital classroom” on her blog www.jillfalk.com.
