Biography

Joseph A. Cernik (PhD, New York University) is chair, Department of Public Affairs & Administration, Professor of Political Science & Public Administration.  He has publish on healthcare reform, the American Civil War, Soviet affairs the Reagan Presidency, nuclear strategy, Constitutional Law, and American politics in the St. Petersburg Times, the Tampa Tribune, West Newsmagazine, Metro Medicine, the St. Louis Journalism Review, Presidential Studies Quarterly, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the St. Louis Beacon, and the Journal of Educational Leadership in Action.  In addition, he has contributed chapers to and edited a book on topics such as nuclear doctrine, Buck O'Neill and Negro League baseball, the Catholic bishops' pastoral letters, and the use of nuclear threats.  The Reagan Years: Perspectives and Assessment a book he co-edited and contributed to, is listed by the Ronald Reagan Trail Association as a book to read on the Reagan Presidency.  He has served as a consultant on issues dealing with local governments on special taxing districts, home rule, and government reorganization.  Furthermore, he has been awarded two fellowships: one to study nuclear technology sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and one to study military history at West Point, sponsored by the United States Army's Training and Doctrine Command.  He is the editor of the Missouri Policy Journal (an online journal, available in two issues a year).  He has also won the Governor'sTeaching in Excellence Award, the Student Government Association (SGA) Teacher of the Year Award, the Emerson Teaching Excellence Award, and two Lindys (for his TV show "Insight" and TV show "Book & Strikes").  He is a frequent political analyst on FOX 2 News and KPLR 11 News in St. Louis.  He is one of the four indiividuals who helped to found a 60 and over baseball league and is starting pitcher and plays outfield on his team (Lions).
