Gateway Science Academy Charter School Sponsorship

Lindenwood University sponsors Gateway Science Academy Charter School (GSA) of St. Louis. The school serves approximately 715 students, grades K-9. It will expand to serve grade 10 in 2013-2014, and add a grade each year thereafter. Last year, GSA exceeded the Saint Louis Public School District’s scores and met the Missouri State Averages in math, communication arts, and science.  With only two years of data, the school met 100% according to Annual Performance Report results in 2012. The school opened its doors in 2010 and in its initial year, welcomed students from over 40 different schools. Another campus is scheduled to open in August 2013 and will serve grades K-5.

Gateway Science Academy is a public charter school that provides its students with an innovative world class education- rich in math, science and technology focused on preparing students to become confident problem solvers and ethical leaders, skill-ready for post-secondary education, and to meet challenges of a competitive global workforce.

All charters must contain Academic Goals and Student Learning Objectives, Financial Health Goals as well as Governance/Operational Goals which are subject to review and revision by Lindenwood. These goals and objectives are monitored through a performance contract with Lindenwood University.

Description of Sponsor Mission

By agreeing to sponsor public charter schools, Lindenwood shows that it supports schools that offer high quality education for students in St. Louis. In theory, quality authorizing or sponsoring a charter school, if done correctly, should lead to higher gains academically and overall increase in quality of the school performance. Lindenwood holds its sponsored charter schools to high standards and expectations.

Lindenwood offers its resources as a university to assist the developing charter school. In turn, Lindenwood strives to gain information about how the charter school is able to be successful with urban students, and share that knowledge with Lindenwood’s own students in various fields of education.

"Teaching and Leading as an Art and a Science"
The School of Education agrees that the general outcome of the teacher education program must be teaching professionals that believe and implement teaching as a blend of “Art” and “Science” as represented by the Beauty and Mechanism of the Spellmann Clock Tower… Teaching as an art because teaching is a craft that must be learned and applied in an authentic environment. Teaching as a science because it must be influenced by research and best practice for optimal student learning to be achieved.
