About Rev. Jerry Paul
Introduction by Victoria Schmitt Babb, Vice President, Paradigm Shift Studio
The Rev. Jerry W. Paul is president and chief executive officer of Deaconess Foundation, a regional faith-based foundation in St. Louis, Missouri USA. The Foundation provides financial assistance to a variety of charities in the St. Louis area, with missions devoted to addressing the health and well-being needs of children from low-wealth neighborhoods and families.
Currently, Rev. Paul leads the Foundation’s initiative to assist charities in strengthening their infrastructures. Called “capacity-building,” the initiative provides funding and expertise to eight critical charities over a period of five years. Each organization, with consultant input, develops a multi-year capacity-building plan, which serves as the basis for Deaconess’ assistance. Leadership development, refinement of operating systems, fundraising support, professional coaching, and equipment acquisition are some of the areas of interest.
Prior to joining the Foundation in 1997, Rev. Paul was a hospital executive for nearly 20 years, for the last five serving as president and CEO of a three-hospital system in St. Louis. He began his career as a pastor of United Church of Christ congregations in the Mid-West. He holds an undergraduate degree in philosophy, a master of divinity degree and a healthcare management degree. Rev. Paul has read widely in the fields of management and organization development over the years and has assisted a wide range of charitable organizations in planning, mission and vision development, board training, change management and consultation on various aspects of organizational operations. He is a frequent speaker on topics related to human service issues and a preacher in various settings of the church. He also taught for several years at the Washington University School of Medicine Health Administration Program in St. Louis.
