Chinese Studies - Degrees

Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Studies

For the past few decades China has increasingly become a nation of interest and importance to Americans and to the world overall. Although a general awareness of China through popular media and general news is useful, understanding the culture and civilization of the world’s most populous country is vital to businesses, political institutions, travellers, and the educated public. Chinese studies include the knowledge of the ancient Chinese traditions, the understanding of a long and rich history, and a familiarity with the major language of China. A Chinese Studies major will be able to speak and read Chinese, will be familiar with Chinese history, will understand China’s position in the world today, and will be able to live and work in China. Professionals with a background in Chinese studies may function as translators, as interpreters for visitors and delegations from China, as instructors in Chinese history and culture, and as business people engaged in commerce in China. To further their ability in Mandarin and their understanding of Chinese culture, students in the Chinese Studies Program have an opportunity to live and study at sister schools located in China. There are both short-term and semester long study abroad options.

There will be two emphases available to Chinese Studies majors:

Mandarin Language

Mandarin Language is intended for those individuals who are interested in the fields of translation and interpretation, and also provides an opportunity to further develop the skills necessary to obtain certification in the teaching of Chinese at elementary and secondary levels. Mandarin Language includes the ability to engage in conversation with native speakers of Chinese, to travel and thrive in a Chinese-speaking environment, to apply for and enroll in translator associations, and to serve as guides for visiting delegations from China. Those wishing to teach Mandarin in the US K-12 system will be prepared to sit for the intensive state-proctored language exam.

Chinese History and Culture

Chinese History and Culture is an emphasis intended for students from various backgrounds who intend to turn a familiarity with Chinese civilization into a career teaching, consulting, and advising institutions and individuals doing business with or travelling to China. Chinese History and Culture includes an understanding of China’s historical tradition, its culture and art, as well as its contemporary economic and political development. These will prove of great value to anyone wishing to reside in or do business with China. This track is also an ideal foundation for further graduate studies in Chinese affairs or a related discipline.

A minor in Chinese Studies will also be available.
