Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate understanding of language as a system, including phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics, and semantics. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 1.a.)
     
  • Students will understand and apply theories and research in language acquisition and development to English language learning and teaching. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 1.b.)
     
  • Students will know, understand, and use major theories and research related to the nature and role of culture in English language learning and teaching. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 2)
     
  • Students will know, understand, and apply concepts, research, and best practices to plan English language instruction. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 3.a.)
     
  • Students will know, manage, and implement a variety of standards-based teaching strategies and techniques for developing and integrating English listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 3.b.)
     
  • Students will become familiar with a wide range of standards-based materials, resources, and technologies, and will choose, adapt, and use them in effective English language teaching. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 3.c.)
     
  • Students will demonstrate understanding of various assessment issues as they affect English language learners, such as accountability, bias, special education testing, language proficiency, and accommodations in formal testing situations. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 4.a.)
     
  • Students will know and use a variety of standards-based language proficiency instruments to show language growth and to inform English language instruction. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 4.b.)
     
  • Students will know and use a variety of performance-based assessment tools and techniques to inform English language instruction. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 4.c.)
     
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of history, research, educational public policy, and current practice in the field of TESOL/Applied Linguistics and use this knowledge to inform English language learning and teaching. (TESOL/NCATE Standard 5.a.)
