Student Learning Outcomes

Program Student Learning Outcome #1

Students will learn and refine techniques in the craft of literary writing and will apply learned craft techniques to their own original writing.

Components (Performance Criteria) of this SLO

  • Students are able to revise original writing for conciseness, clarity, word choice, and accuracy.
    • Students are able to revise original writing for creative impact: effective descriptions, essential details, content resonates with the reader.
    • Students are able to produce a final revised piece of writing that is publishable in a literary journal or other literary publication.

Program Student Learning Outcome #2

Students will do close readings of literary works and analyze works from a writer’s perspective, as well as apply their analyses and critical observations to their own original writing.

Components (Performance Criteria) of this SLO

  • Students are able to analyze published works from a writer’s perspective, focusing on the author’s choices and the impact of the choices on the work.
    • Students are able to synthesize information gained from analysis and incorporate those choices and skills in students’ own written work.
    • Students are able to constructively critique the written work of peers and apply those insights to students’ own written work.

Program Student Learning Outcome #3

Students will create complete works of original creative writing and will give useful feedback on other students’ writing.

Components (Performance Criteria) of this SLO

  • Students are able to master writing mechanics: correct grammar usage, no errors in spelling or punctuation usage, complex sentence structure.
    • Students are able to develop a consistent writing style: distinctive personal voice, inventive use of language, a balance of clarity and creativity.
    • Students are able to master advanced writing techniques: the craft of literary writing, layers of meaning in writing, a structure that is clear and appropriate for the piece of writing.
