Lady Lions fall to No. 1-ranked team

March 9, 2000

The Lindenwood University women's basketball season ended Saturday as the Lady Lions battled St. Francis, IN, the nation's top-ranked team, and fell 92-66 in Sioux City, IA at the NAIA Women's Basketball Championships.

LU, ranked 9th in the country, concludes its season with a 30-6 record. St. Francis moves on to the Final Four.

In her final game, senior center Jaime Bonney scored 23 points and had eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Katie Pizzardi had 14 points and freshman guard Julianne Van Daniker had seven points.

Bonney poured in 41 points Friday morning to lead the Lady Lions to an 86-62 victory over Bethany, KN in second round.

Bonney played all but two minutes in the game, connecting on 11 field goals and hitting an amazing 19 of 20 free throws. She collected 11 rebounds.

Her teammates were just as impressive, with Pizzardi scoring 18 points, and Katie Cannon scoring 17 points. Amy Chase pulled down 10 rebounds.

LU shot 46 percent for the game, and was an impressive 6-for-11 from three-point range. The Lady Lions were 28-for-36 from the free throw line as a team.

In their first round game on Thursday, Lindenwood steamrolled unranked Northwestern (MN) 72-50.

Bonney once again led the charge for LU, scoring 18 of her 23 points in the second half and pulling down 10 rebounds. Cannon scored 14 points, and Pizzardi had 10 points.
