Softball team opens with win at NAIA nationals

May 18, 2000

The Lady Lions won their first-round match Wednesday in the NAIA softball national championships with a 3-0 victory over Georgian Court College of New Jersey.

The 16-team double elimination tournament is being held in Decatur, Alabama.

Sallie Henry struck out six Georgian Court batters and scattered four hits in the game.

The Lady Lions scored all their runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Tamara Waltz doubled and advanced on Karen Peer's base hit. Michelle Patrico then drove in Waltz with a single.

Next up was Jacque Woosley, who singled, driving in Peer. And with Lady Lions up 2-0, Dawn Cameron singled and drove in Patrico for an insurance run.

Both Peer and Woosley went 2-for-4 on the day for LU.

The No. 5-seeded Lady Lions are now 34-10 on the season. LU plays the No. 4 seed, Mary N.D., which has a 40-3 record, at 3 p.m. CST today.
