Lindenwood University and UM-St. Louis have formalized a partnership to benefit area school administrators. The partnership allows qualified Lindenwood Specialist in Education Degree program graduates to move efficiently into doctoral studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
President Dennis Spellmann believes the partnership will encourage Lindenwood University graduates to pursue doctoral studies.
“Our Specialist in Education Degree program prepares practicing administrators to become certified at the Advanced Principal and/or Superintendent level,” said Spellmann. “Rather than establish our own doctoral program at this time, we believe this partnership will serve our graduates well.”
UM-St. Louis College of Education Dean Charles Schmitz has made expanding the services provided to area educators a high priority.
“This partnership will allow able school administrators the opportunity to achieve the doctoral degree in close proximity to their home or work,” said Schmitz. “The Lindenwood Specialist Degree program provides an excellent preparation for school administrators wishing to achieve the doctoral degree.”
Under the agreement, the combined 60-hour Master’s and Specialist Degree coursework required at Lindenwood University will be fully accepted into the UM-St. Louis doctoral program. Students will be required to complete an additional 21 hours of coursework and a dissertation at UM-St. Louis in order to earn the doctoral degree. UM-St. Louis faculty members will meet with Lindenwood classes to explain the program options and allow for early acceptance into the doctoral program.
According to Spellmann, this partnership is a good example of how higher education institutions can cooperate to effectively serve Missouri students.
“Our program is very practical and aimed at the day-to-day management skills required of school administrators. Um-St. Louis is a research institution that provides strong preparation in the more comprehensive issues related to school administration. It is a partnership that serves both our institutions and our students well.”
