Education dean honored with library friend award

Lindenwood University Dean of Education Rick Boyle has received the Missouri Association of School Librarians Friend of School Library award.

Boyle was honored April 14 at the general session of the MASL. He was nominated after he heard area superintendents discuss the need for a library science program and worked to develop such a program, said Yvonne Gibbs, librarian in the Kirkwood School District.

Boyle researched what needed to be offered and talked with those in charge of library science programs around the country, said Maggie Newbold, librarian at Fort Zumwalt West High School. He put a together a School Library Media Specialist certificate program that allows teachers to obtain certification while working on their master’s.

Boyle, 55, came to Lindenwood in 1997. He has been dean of education since 1998. He taught high school chemistry for four years and was a middle school and high school principal for 26 years in the metro area. He and his wife live in Lake Saint Louis.
