LU's Daniel Boone Home Hosts Civil War Weekend

November 14, 2005

November 19-20, 2005

(Defiance, Mo.) On Saturday, November 19 and Sunday, November 20, The Daniel Boone Home and Boonesfield Village will host a Civil War Weekend. This will be a two day demonstration of life in Missouri in 1865, and will take a look at the issues that faced us at the end of the Civil War. Costumed volunteers will be available to discuss daily life in Missouri and the new struggle to re-build the nation.

The year is 1865. Gen. R.E. Lee surrendered the Army of the Northern Virginia to Gen. U.S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse over seven months ago. Confederate forces in the west surrendered at Shreveport, Louisiana in June. Now the time of rejoicing has past and the people of Missouri must re-build their lives, families and the nation. But what challenges await them? Will they be able to reconcile broken friendships and families?

Union soldiers will be mustering out of the army and preparing to resume their former lives and occupations. Confederate soldiers are returning home from the South finding that Missouri is not the same as it was four years ago. The new State Constitution is up for popular vote and only loyal citizens are able to cast their ballot. A new state law only allows loyal Missourians to hold public office, be lawyers, preachers and teachers.
