Walker to Speak Feb. 28 About Eastern Europe

George Herbert Walker III, who served as U.S. ambassador to Hungary from 2003 to 2006, will offer “An Ambassador’s Assessment of Eastern Europe” at Lindenwood University at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Anheuser-Busch Leadership Room of Lindenwood’s Spellmann Campus Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Walker’s economic policy lecture is co-sponsored by the Lindenwood Division of Management and the Institute for the Study of Economics and the Environment. He will talk about the ambassador’s role in a country like Hungary, particularly where it applies to trade. Other topics may include: Hungary’s development, compared to other European nations; the state of U.S. relations with Hungary; and a discussion of Hungarian culture.

Prior to serving as ambassador, Walker was president and chief executive officer of Stifel Financial and Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Incorporated. He is currently Chairman Emeritus of those same two companies. Walker also served on the board of the Midwest Stock Exchange (now the Chicago Stock Exchange) and the Regional Firms Advisory Committee of the New York Stock Exchange. He has served on the board of directors for Webster University since 1974.

A resident of St. Louis, Walker has been active in local and national politics, serving as chairman of Downtown St. Louis and working with a number of other civic groups, including a budget and finance committee for St. Louis Mayor Freeman Bosley and a more recent manifestation of the committee, devoted to the proposition of changing the structure of St. Louis municipal government. He worked on the election campaigns of presidents Reagan and Bush.
