LU to Host Math Competition

Lindenwood University will be a host site for the annual MAA (Mathematics Association of America) Mathematics Competition for high school students on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Thirty-three students from the St. Charles County area will try to qualify for the United States Mathematical Olympiad in April; top finishers may also qualify for scholarships to Lindenwood.

Sign-ups closed on January 31. The competition is for all four high school grade levels; juniors and seniors will take one 75-minute, 25-question, multiple choice exam, and freshmen and sophomores will take a another (although they will have the option of taking the harder test if they prefer more of a challenge). The competition will be administered in Room 215 of Young Science Hall, starting at 3:20 p.m. Students will gather at 3 p.m. for a welcome and discussion of the rules.

Students in the competition are striving to make it to a second qualifying round (the American Invitational Mathematics Examination) on March 13 and then to the United States Mathematical Olympiad in late April. Additionally, the top three finishers in the junior/senior group will be offered Lindenwood scholarships worth $5,000 each. Additionally, anyone who scores a 90 percent or higher on the junior/senior-level exam will be offered a full scholarship (tuition, room and board) at Lindenwood.
