'The Diviners' Opens Feb. 6

The Lindenwood University Theatre Program will present Jim Leonard’s play, “The Diviners,” at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 6, 7, 13 and 14 in the university’s J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts, 2300 West Clay Street in St. Charles.

The play will be performed in the center’s Emerson Black Box Theater; tickets cost $10 each and are available at the Scheidegger Center Box Office and by calling 636-949-4433.

“The Diviners” is set in the fictitious town of Zion, Ind., during the Great Depression. The town’s population of 40 is strewn with eccentric characters, perhaps none more so than Buddy, a young boy left mentally diminished following a near drowning from which his mother died saving him. The incident has left him highly sensitive to water because of his intense fear of it, which his neighbors use to help them find water sources.

The lives of the townsfolk are changed when former preacher C.C. Showers appears in Zion, looking for an escape from the life he left behind. As the thought-provoking story progresses, the characters and the audience are left to ponder the nature of salvation itself.

The cast features Joshua Payne, Brian Kappler, J.M. Lewis, Colleen Kelly, Taylor Lewis, Kimi Wibbenmeyer, Betsy Bowman, Jason Puff, Hassie Davis, Joseph Bayne and Michael Ginsburg. The director is Shaun Sheley; stage manager is Natalie Piacentini.
