Letter Writing/Phone Effort Regarding State Education Cuts Set for Wednesday

The Lindenwood University Student Government Association (LSGA) has organized a letter writing and phone call campaign from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, in the Connection Room on the lower level of the Spellmann Center. Participants will have the opportunity to voice their opposition to Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s proposal to eliminate Bright Flight and Access Missouri state grant funding for students attending independent colleges and universities.

Nearly 20 percent of students attending Lindenwood currently receive Access Missouri grants. If the program is eliminated, many will likely suffer financial hardship in order to continue attending their school of choice.

“The state budget should not be balanced on the backs of students with demonstrated financial need who choose to attend Missouri’s independent institutions, as they are certainly no less deserving of assistance than those who choose to attend public institutions,” said Lindenwood President James D. Evans, Ph.D. “These students and their parents are Missouri taxpayers with real financial need, and they have a right to receive Missouri’s educational grant support. It is critical that students, parents, and alumni take the time to voice their opposition to this measure.”

Students, faculty and staff who attend the April 7 event will be encouraged to express in their own words what the state funding means to them. Those who are unable to attend are invited to contact the governor by mailing letters of opposition to The Office of Governor Jay Nixon, P.O. Box 720, Jefferson City, Mo., 65102, or by calling his office at (573) 751-3222.
