Lindenwood to Host Martin Luther King Day Observance

January 11, 2011

Lindenwood University’s Black Student Union will present “The Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17, in the Emerson Black Box Theatre of the J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

The program will feature a keynote presentation by Angela da Silva, adjunct professor of African American Studies at Lindenwood University’s Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance, Mo. She frequently portrays a slave woman named Lila during local reenactment events and is considered one of the region’s foremost authorities on the topic of African American history.

In addition to da Silva’s address, the program will also include student readings of excerpts from King’s speeches and performances of musical selections by Lindenwood University’s premier vocal group, Voices Only.

“This is an outstanding opportunity to revisit the legacy of Dr. King and its relevance today,” said Shane Williamson, EdD, associate professor of Education and director of First Year Programs. “It’s going to be an uplifting celebration.”
