Lindenwood Sibley Day 2011 Schedule is Set

February 17, 2011

Lindenwood University will host its third annual Sibley Day on Wednesday, Feb. 23, in honor of University founders George and Mary Sibley. Students will be excused from classes in order to attend their choice of more 40 presentations and events scheduled throughout the day.

The tradition began in 2009 as an opportunity for faculty and staff to expand their areas of interest and to celebrate the school’s philosophy of offering unique educational experiences. This year’s Sibley Day, themed “Past to Present to Future,” promises to be the largest so far.

“I like to call it an academic pep rally,” said Jennifer Firestine, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Chemistry and Faculty Council Chair of Sibley Day. “It’s about taking the time to talk about things that aren’t scheduled in regular classes. The enthusiasm behind it grows each year and the event continues to grow.”

A keynote presentation will be delivered by Rice University inventor, roboticist, and researcher Dr. James McLurkin from 10-11:30 a.m. in the Bezemes Family Theatre. A variety of events and workshops will also take place throughout the day, ending with a marshmallow roast around a campfire from 5-7 p.m. outside the Spellmann Center.

“Another new thing this year is the decoration of the Sibley graves from 9 to 9:30 a.m.,” Firestine said. “From 1906 to 1979, the ladies of Lindenwood would host annual Founder’s Day parades and at the end they would decorate the graves. Adding the decoration part to this year’s event is a nice way to honor that part of the school’s tradition.

“The entire day is geared toward taking the time to focus on Lindenwood’s history, and then looking forward to where our students may take things in the future.”
