Scheidegger Center for the Arts, at 2300 West Clay St., just west of First Capitol Drive in St. Charles.
Written by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, Urinetown made its Broadway debut in September 2001 and was nominated for 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It won in the musical theatre categories of Best Book, Best Score, and Best Direction.
Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, Urinetown is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Hailed as one of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, the story is set in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. A 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets, and the citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission. Amid the people, a hero decides he’s had enough, and plans a revolution.
The musical is directed by Nick Kelly. Musical director is Pamela Grooms, while stage manager is Kyle Long. Scenic design is by Donnell Walsh, and light and costume design are by Natalie Smith and Donna Northcott, respectively.
