In the past week, Lindenwood University-Belleville took another leap forward in its academic and student service offerings with state approval to add three new degrees and begin the construction of a student residence hall on campus.
On Feb. 5, the Illinois Board of Higher Education approved three new degree programs to be offered at LU-Belleville starting in fall 2013. They include a Bachelor of Science in information technology, a Master of Science in administration with an emphasis area in management or marketing, and a Master of Arts in gerontology.
Each of these degrees will be offered through the university’s LCIE program, or Lindenwood College for Individualized Education. This accelerated evening format functions on a quarter schedule and allows students to attend class one night per week from 6-10 p.m. Students in the LCIE program have the potential to earn their degrees in as little as 15 months. These newest degrees are the first to be added to the LCIE program in several years.
“The new degrees will offer additional areas of expertise from which our students will definitely benefit,” said Dr. Cindy Manjounes, associate dean of academics at LU-Belleville. “The MSA with emphasis in management or marketing affords the graduate student the possibility for a degree akin to the MBA but with an emphasis area and less of a focus on finance. Due to our aging society, students with an education in gerontology are also in demand in a number of different fields, as the MA degree gives one an in-depth knowledge of how to work with older adults. Many students pursue the gerontology degree not only for professional reasons, but also to better understand their own aging process or that of a loved one.
“The newest undergraduate degree, the BS in information technology, is one we have been asked about several times, and the market has a high demand for students with this type of technical expertise.”
