The RN-to-BSN program at Lindenwood University School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (SONAHS) meets the needs of nurses who want to advance their educational preparation to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. The program is designed for students who have completed a basic nursing degree or diploma or those who are pursuing a basic nursing degree and want to concurrently enroll to begin work toward a BSN. The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Future of Nursing report (2011) calls for at least 80% of practicing professional nurses to be prepared at the baccalaureate level. LU’s RN-to-BSN program offers professional nurses in our community the opportunity to expand their educational preparation for practice to be in line with the expectations of our profession and the increasingly complex healthcare environment.
The RN-to-BSN curriculum was developed to achieve the AACN Essentials of BSN education through general education and nursing coursework. Students work directly with a faculty advisor to individualize a plan of study to meet all the nursing and general education requirements to complete the BSN degree. Samples plans of study are offered to give students an idea of how they can progress through the BSN program – all the sample plans of study are designed at a part time rate to allow for the unique adult learning demands of life, work, and school balance.
The School of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences (SONAHS) utilizes a hybrid or blended (online and face-to-face) learning environment to facilitate nursing coursework. Hybrid courses blend the efficiency and convenience of online learning experiences with active, engaged traditional classroom “face-to-face” experiences that offer enriching student and faculty connections. The hybrid learning model is particularly suited to the needs of the adult learner who is striving for optimal work, life, and school balance. At the SONAHS, the typical hybrid nursing course includes two face-to-face sessions with the remaining learning occurring via the online learning environment.
Lindenwood University prides itself on providing students with values-centered programs leading to the development of the whole person – an educated, responsible citizen of a global community. The nursing faculty works collaboratively with the Center for Distance Learning and plays a key role in enhancing the education process with various forms of technology. Distance technology provides a stable place for students to receive information, view captured lectures, take tests and quizzes, submit assignments, and conduct high-level intellectual discussions as an integral part of the learning process. Lindenwood University uses Blackboard for our online learning platform.
