Recreation, Sport and Tourism Administration

Program Overview

Nationally and internationally, society places a high value on quality opportunities that promote participation, amusement, and skill development that contribute to a healthy mind and body. As people will continue to pay to play, the need for educated professionals to manage the distribution of recreation, sport and tourism related services and products continues to grow. The recreation, sport and tourism administration program develops students’ knowledge and ability to design, facilitate and manage meaningful experiences to improve the quality of life for everyone. The experience and dedication of the department faculty fosters healthy lifestyles, effective management and marketing of organizations, and social and economic development of businesses and communities.

Career Opportunities

Recreation, sport and tourism are recognized professions that will continue to grow in public, for-profit, and not-for profit settings. Students receive a curriculum based on leisure theory and human behavior, management skills, and recreational event programming in order to prepare students for a career in one of today's largest and fastest growing industries - Leisure. Graduates work outdoors, indoors, and even in clinical settings but are rarely tied to a desk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some of the career opportunities include:

  • Community park and recreation departments
  • Sport and fitness organizations and facilities
  • Resorts, theme parks, and cruise lines
  • Rehabilitation centers and hospitals
  • Outdoor youth and family camps
  • Non-profit community organizations
  • Behavioral and therapeutic agencies
  • Adventure guides and outdoor outfitters
  • Travel and tourism agencies
