Recreation Administration

Program Overview

The recreation administration program promotes healthy lifestyles by advancing knowledge about the choices people make during their discretionary time throughout the lifespan.  The recreation curriculum enhances students’ knowledge and ability to design and facilitate meaningful experiences to improve the quality of life for everyone.  The department appreciates the significance of play, the contribution of the arts, and the value of diversity.  The experience and dedication of the recreation faculty fosters healthy lifestyles, environmental stewardship, effective management and marketing of organizations, and social and economic development of communities.

Career Opportunities

The recreation administration program prepares students for rewarding positions in public, for-profit, and not-for profit leisure agencies.  Students receive a curriculum based on leisure theory and human behavior, management skills, and recreational event programming in order to prepare students for a career in one of today's largest and fastest growing industries - Leisure.  Graduates work outdoors, indoors, and even in clinical settings but are rarely tied to a desk from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Some of the career opportunities include:

  • Community park and recreation departments
  • Sport and fitness organizations and facilities
  • Resorts, theme parks, and cruise lines
  • Rehabilitation centers and hospitals
  • Outdoor youth and family camps
  • Local, state, and national park systems
  • Adventure guides and outdoor outfitters
  • Travel and tourism agencies
