Lindenwood Co-Hosts St. Louis Regional Collegiate Pickleball Tournament

Lindenwood University and Washington University in St. Louis Pickleball Clubs co-hosted the inaugural St. Louis Regional Collegiate Pickleball Tournament. This event, held in Bridgeton, was attended by over 70 students from eight universities in Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Lindenwood’s team of Carter Smith, Madelyn Burkhardt, Edwardo Guzman, and Laura Cochran won silver medals in the tournament.

The tournament comes as the St. Louis region establishes itself as a top pickleball city in the country. Arch Pickleball and Badminton, the site of the event, is one of over fifty different pickleball facilities across St. Louis and St. Charles Counties. As enthusiasm for the sport builds in the region, Lindenwood is creating opportunities for students to play competitively. This tournament is a first step for the University’s club as they grow and welcome new members.

Coordinator of Clery Compliance and Training Jose Obando serves as the staff advisor for the Lindenwood Pickleball Club. Obando noted the excitement and energy levels that remained high throughout the 179 matches played at the tournament and called the event a success. “The normally dull sounds of play were punctuated by loud cheers, thundering shots, and very enthusiastic athletes cheering on their respective teammates, the atmosphere was electric,” Obando said. With such excitement for the sport throughout the region, Obando hopes to continue expanding the pickleball club with a goal to earn a spot at Collegiate Nationals in 2026.
