To the Lindenwood community,
Today, I am sharing two important announcements that impact our university community.
First, after a comprehensive evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue 10 athletic teams at the conclusion of their respective seasons this academic year. This decision is a result of a thorough assessment of our athletic department's sustainability, aligning with our commitment to upholding the high-quality academic and athletic experiences that define our university.
The athletic teams being discontinued are:
- NCAA Men’s Lacrosse, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Men’s Tennis, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Men’s Indoor Track & Field, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Men’s Outdoor Track & Field, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Men’s Wrestling, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Women’s Field Hockey, effective December 1, 2023
- NCAA Women’s Gymnastics, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
- SLS Men’s and Women’s Cycling, effective at conclusion of Spring 2024 season
Second, in addition to these changes with our athletic teams, we are embarking on a broader initiative to rebalance our investments in staffing across various university divisions. As of December 1, the University has eliminated nine filled positions as well as many vacant positions. We have concentrated efforts to support robust academic programming and have maintained all filled faculty positions. These decisions, while challenging, support Lindenwood’s continued evolution as we strive to meet the needs of students.
We are committed to assisting all members of the University community affected by these changes, and additional details can be found in our frequently asked questions. Additional support resources have been provided to students and employees.
Our commitment to excellence is steadfast, and we appreciate your understanding and support during this rebalance and reallocation of resources. We are dedicated to transparency as we navigate these changes together.
Thank you for your continued dedication to our university community.

Why was this decision made?
The decision was made after an extensive evaluation of the athletic department. Over the last year, the university, with support from external consultants, formulated a set of data-informed recommendations. It was determined that the athletic department, which sponsors 30 NCAA sports, had become too large to sustain the quality of the student experience Lindenwood expects. The choice is part of a broader initiative dedicated to ensuring the sustainability and quality of both academic and athletic programs. The university is working to rebalance investments in athletics, academics, and staffing while carefully monitoring expenditures to create an environment where excellence flourishes in all aspects of university life.
Why is this being done now?
There is no ideal time to announce sport reductions. The University felt it was right to let student-athletes know as soon as the decision was final. The timing of this announcement was purposeful to allow student-athletes and coaches to make informed decisions about their future plans.
How many student-athletes are affected?
The reduction will impact approximately 284 student-athletes. The University will honor all scholarships for affected student-athletes through their undergraduate education.
What was the process that led to this decision?
Lindenwood evaluated many factors and worked through a variety of scenarios. These included, but are not limited to, facility considerations, compliance, fiscal sustainability, geographic competition scheduling opportunities and a comparison of the number of sports sponsored by the other Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) schools.
Will the University assist current and incoming student-athletes who wish to pursue opportunities at other schools?
Yes, Lindenwood has provided affected student-athletes with information regarding transfer options. Administrators will continue to be available to assist and support as needed.
What support is the University providing to impacted student-athletes and employees?
Lindenwood provides support in several areas. Academics, compliance, sports medicine and mental health resources will continue to be available to both student-athletes and employees. Lindenwood University Athletic Department administrators are available to discuss scholarship and transfer information.
Will the University continue to provide student-athlete scholarships?
Yes, the University will honor scholarships for all student-athletes at Lindenwood who are currently on a discontinued team, as well as incoming student-athletes who have signed a letter of intent who choose to complete their degrees at Lindenwood.
Is the University planning the discontinuation of other sports?
Lindenwood is not considering the discontinuation of other sports at this time.
Would additional donor support or fundraising reinstate the impacted sports?
Donor support would not impact the final decision. The reduction of these sports was determined by several factors, such as facility considerations, compliance, fiscal sustainability, geographic competition scheduling opportunities and a comparison of the number of sports sponsored by schools in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC).
Is Lindenwood planning to reclassify the discontinued NCAA sports as Student Life Sports (SLS)?
No, the University is not planning to reclassify these programs as SLS sports.
What other steps is Lindenwood taking to rebalance resources across campus?
Lindenwood University has eliminated nine filled positions, effective December 1, 2023. No currently filled faculty positions have been eliminated, as the University concentrates efforts to support robust academic programming.
