Course Description
The new generations of Native American Writers stand on the shoulders of many ancestors—Ohiyesa (Charles Eastman), Zitkala-Sa, Black Elk, N. Scott Momaday, Leslie Marmo Silko, and James Welch bloom into Louis Erdrich, Sherman Alexie, Joy Harjo, Tommy Orange, and Jake Skeets. Who are these First Americans and their contributions to the culture of our country? Through their words, we will travel two ways in time. Following Susan Brill de Ramirez’s example, we will become “listener-readers and active participants” in written stories. We will do this to better understand how respective oral and storytelling traditions inform American Indian literatures and strengthen our own writing.
