Course Description
In this workshop, we will examine the constrictive, yet artistically expansive, form: flash fiction. We will read a variety of examples of flash fiction and discuss efficiency of prose, economy of language, white space/subtext, structure, sentence beauty, and debate the importance (or unimportance) of narrative to determine how flash fiction is sometimes story, and other times, perhaps, a reflection of an idea, a thought, a feeling, or stressing the complexity of an experience. Additionally, students will generate new works of flash fiction at a variety of lengths in order to further flex their aesthetics so that they may operate effectively within only a few hundred words up to one thousand. Stories will be workshopped by peers, and the class will culminate in a final project of revised flash fiction.
