Course Description

We’re in a new world of superfires and superstorms, and in this workshop-driven course, the new hot genre of Climate Fiction will be our jumping off point. We’ll read CliFi stories that range from domestic, realistic narratives set in the near future to more swashbuckling speculative fiction set in a further future.

We’ll also do exercises in world building and world unbuilding as it pertains to climate change, and we’ll examine setting’s impact on characters, conflict, dialogue, imagery, and plot.

Each student will submit up to 12 pages (of a novel, a short story or flash fiction pieces) in two workshop sessions, and students will read and provide thoughtful comments to these peer submissions each week. Journal writing assignments and reading assignments also will be due weekly, as they will help feed your writing.

Please note: The Climate Fiction (CliFi) lit and craft course is not a prerequisite for this workshop course--so welcome, all writers! And although these courses are related, the readings and exercises do not overlap, so, former students of the clifi lit course, this is a chance to workshop and deeper into your stories!
