Course Description

What does a lyric poem mean in the 21st century? How does a lyric poem mean today? How do lyric poems communicate and engage our and our language’s consciousness and unconsciousness, our bodies and our cognition? What different emotional and intellectual wavelengths do lyric poems operate on, and how can different approaches to the relationship between the poet, the poem, and the reader direct us to those wavelengths? These are the questions that students will answer through the generation and discussion of original poems, as well as through selected materials (poems, essays, videos, and podcast episodes) exemplifying and reflecting on the forms of innovative contemporary lyric poems.
