Pirate School! is a madcap, swashbuckling solo variety show created and performed by veteran New York physical comedian and actor David Engel that satisfies children’s universal curiosity for the briny buccaneers of yore, while promoting everyday polite behavior and social-courage.
The bumbling pirate professor Billy Bones, played by David Engel, teaches youngsters the finer points of light-hearted mischief. The audience partakes in riotous, joyful competitions that rattle the rafters and zany lessons on how to stand, talk, sing, and laugh like jaunty buccaneers. Shows feature an original cartoon-like sound effect and musical score, eye-popping puppetry, eccentric props, adept magic, slapstick swordplay antics, a misbehaving cannon, a talking skull and the world’s only wearable pirate ship!
Pirate School: Follow Your Compass! is an "anti-bully" production that's "pro-kid" and wants children to thrive in real school as well, and a safe school environment is a productive school. Bullies lose their status when kids are empowered to be witnesses and to "stand up for your mates." This riotous and inspiring student matinée has compelling pro-social themes woven into its corsair curriculum. During the show, students are prompted to “follow your heart, your inner compass” and experience simple solutions to resolving conflict, while the vital, everyday concepts of respect, responsibility, compassion, and courage are underscored.
Recommended for grades K–5.
