18 19 FALL 2022 EDITION FALL 2022 EDITION THE LINDENWOOD THE LINDENWOOD CANOPY The Mighty Lindenwood legacy is a big part of sisters Jane Rogers and Nancy Calvert’s lives. Their mother, Eloise Worthington, was the first member of the family to fall in love with the school. Eloise attended Lindenwood for a year and a half; she dropped out because of the expense of college post-Depression and because she and her soon-to-be husband, Preston Calvert, were making wedding plans. Eloise was proud of her alma mater, and it remained an important part of her life. Nancy and Jane first visited Lindenwood in the summer of 1956, when Nancy was a rising high school senior. Nancy fell in love with Lindenwood and decided to commit to the school that very day. Jane, at just eight years old, was pre-registered the same day. Both Jane and Nancy studied communications and were involved with Lindenwood’s KCLC radio station. They each had a special relationship with Martha Boyer, former communications professor and founder of the Lindenwood radio station, and they admired her unique and progressive teaching style. They said of their university experience, “[We love Lindenwood] for the education and experiences it provided for each of our careers and our lives.” Since her graduation in 1961, Nancy has led an impressive career in marketing, advertising, and public relations. In 1976, she became the first woman to hold an executive position at the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors when she became director of public relations and advertising. In 1989, she became director of marketing communications at Shure Incorporated in Evanston, Illinois. Ever-loyal to her alma mater, Nancy donated equipment to Lindenwood through her job at Shure. Jane graduated from Lindenwood in 1967 and went on to receive a Master of Arts in communications at Indiana University, her father’s alma mater. Jane has worked as a market research executive at Cahners Publishing Company and eventually founded her own successful media consulting business, Preston/Rogers Associates, Inc., which has clients throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. Staying involved with Lindenwood has been very important to the sisters and to their late mother. In a 2002 speech at a Lindenwood alumni awards presentation, Nancy said, “… [Our] mother was always happy to give what she could to Lindenwood. More importantly she urged both of us to give back to Lindenwood in time, talent, and financial support because of the fine education it afforded us and how well it had prepared us for the work world.” Eloise, Jane, and Nancy are members of the Sibley Heritage Society, and the sisters are members of the Butler Society. They were also active with the Board of Directors, the Alumni Association, and the Board of Trustees. Jane and Nancy established an endowed scholarship in honor of their late parents and a scholarship for Jane’s late husband. In 2005, Jane named Calvert Rogers Hall to recognize her late parents, her late husband, and her sister, Nancy Calvert. The sisters are a shining example of the great talent and success of Lindenwood alumni. They have been extremely generous to the University throughout the years since their graduation, and they have created a thriving legacy that will impact Lindenwood for years to come. Hazel Denother is a senior from Alton, Ill., double majoring in English and Spanish. She is a member of the honors college and has been a contributing writer for several Lindenwood publications.
