Student Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 Policy

Purpose

Lindenwood University is committed to equal opportunity and access in all of its programs and activities and complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act, as amended (ADA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504). The ADA and Section 504 are federal laws designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities, including those that receive Federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education. Consistent with Lindenwood’s commitment, this policy sets forth the process for students to engage with its Accessibility Services Department and participate in the interactive reasonable accommodation process.

Scope

This policy applies to students seeking accommodation based on disability.

Policy

It is the guiding philosophy of Lindenwood to make its facilities, programs, activities, and classes accessible to individuals with disabilities consistent with the ADA and Section 504. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the Student Support and Accessibility Manager to begin the reasonable accommodation process. Each accommodation request will be evaluated based on the unique and individual circumstances of the situation.

Reasonable accommodations are provided on an individual basis and are generally determined based on submitted documentation as well as discussion with students. Accommodations will reflect the information and documentation provided by students.

In order to request and receive accommodations, students should first contact the Student Support and Accessibility Program Manager, Janet Owens, at (636) 949-4768 or by e-mail at jowens1@lindenwood.edu to make a request. The typical next step is for students to provide documentation they believe supports their request(s). The University will then evaluate the request and corresponding documentation and determine whether or not the requested accommodation(s) is reasonable, whether there are alternative accommodation(s) that achieve the same purpose, and/or whether additional clarification or documentation may be necessary to fully evaluate the request.

If the approved accommodation(s) is academic in nature, a Campus Accessibility Faculty Notification Form will be provided to the professors and the student and professors will then discuss arrangements for how to best to implement the accommodation(s).

Students should begin the accommodation request process as soon as possible to help ensure approved accommodations are in place prior to the beginning of each semester/quarter and whenever a class change occurs.
